This Evening, Companies 62 (Witmer) and 63 headed to HIGH Steel Plant #2 to conduct confined space training.
HIGH is currently running numerous steel box girders through their plant, and will be for about a year. We had the opportunity to simulate patient rescues from the steel girders in their yard. This specific scenario simulated the rescue of downed plant workers inside of the girder who had become unconscious.
Crews made entry to the girders and rescued “downed workers” while air monitoring and ventilating.
A RIT was stationed nearby in the instance that rescue personnel would go down while operating in the girder. Relief crews were also in place.
In the instance of an actual emergency, nearby plant personnel could be an asset to rescue efforts through their knowledge and skills. HIGH has cranes available on site, which could also be used for rescue efforts or moving steel.
A big thank you to HIGH Steel for allowing us to come train on this scenario. Although these calls do not happen very often, they have in the past.
