Chemical Drill at Conestoga View
Monday, August 18, 2008
-
Tonight, the volunteers knew that there was going to be training, but they didn't know what type of training it would be. A mock dispatch sent the crews to Conestoga View in Lancaster Twp. for a reported chemical leak. First arriving crews encountered an unknown substance and a maintenance worker lying on the floor. As the "alarm" was upgraded to a Haz Mat assignment, additional units from Lampeter, Willow Street, and a Decontamination engine from Highville were dispatched. With the County Haz Mat Team unavailable, the officers needed to research the chemical and determine if an entry could be made to retrieve a possible victim in the chiller room. After a detailed investigation into the chemical type was made, a crew of 3 entered the room, stopped the leak, and recovered the victim. All personnel then were decontaminated and a critique held. We want to thank the staff of Conestoga View for once again allowing the use of their facility for such a valuable exercise.

This evening, just as weekly equipment maintenance was starting, Truck 63 was sent to the 200 block of Gap Rd. in Strasburg Twp. for a building fire. First arriving crews from Strasburg responded to investigate a possible lightning strike from the previous evening and discovered a fire in the home next door to the church at the corner. The interior of the home had been gutted by a fire that had burnt itself out, possible from the night before as well. The truck was assigned the C side of the home and was released shortly afterward.

Lafayette Earns State Certification
Monday, August 11, 2008
-
Over the weekend, the volunteers of Lafayette were notified that the fire company has been awarded Participating Department status by the Office of the State Fire Commissioner. Participating Department is awarded to fire companies who certify at least 10% of their active firefighters in the state's Firefighter 1 or greater. Firefighter 1 is a certification awarded to an individual firefighter after he/she successfully completes a written exam and numerous practical evolutions which test the firefighter on all basic aspects of firefighting covering things like hoseline advancement, proficiency in the use of self contained breathing apparatus, ventilation, hazardous materials, ladders, water supply, forcible entry, and ropes. The written exam covers topics such as building construction, NFPA standards, hazardous materials, terminology, pre fire planning and communications. Firefighters must also complete basic first aid and participate in a live fire interior firefighting evolution before becoming eligible. After completing Firefighter 1, an individual can opt, and is strongly encouraged, to certify as Firefighter 2 which consists of the same testing criteria but covers advanced topics like foam operations, vehicle rescue, report writing, fire hose testing, and hydrant testing. While the current certification acknowledges our 10% level, it is our goal to achieve the 50% level within the next year.
